Alejandro Garcia, MD, earned his undergraduate degree from The University of Texas at Austin and his medical degree from Ponce School of Medicine in Puerto Rico. He furthered his medical training at the University of Florida where he completed his internship and residency training in general surgery and his fellowship in surgical critical care. Dr. Garcia is board certified by the American Board of Surgery.

Prior to joining South Austin Trauma Surgeons, Dr. Garcia practiced with Ocala Health Trauma in Ocala, Florida. At Ocala Health, he helped create their trauma center. While there, he served as associate trauma medical director.

Dr. Garcia has a passion for training new physicians and has held two academic appointments, first as assistant professor of surgery for University of South Florida and then for University of Central Florida. Over the past three years he helped start a general surgery residency in conjunction with the University of Central Florida.

Dr. Garcia is involved in important clinical research to improve care. While at Ocala Health, he was a principal investigator for a multi-center randomized trial studying early operative management of rib fracture versus non-operative management. He hopes to bring this study to St. David's South Austin Medical Center.
