Ernest Gonzalez, MD, serves as the trauma medical director at St. David’s South Austin Medical Center. He is board certified in surgical critical care and general surgery. Dr. Gonzalez received his Bachelor of Arts in zoology from The University of Texas at Austin and his medical degree from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) in Lubbock. He then moved to El Paso to complete his general surgery residency training at TTUHSC. While there, he served as chief resident.

Dr. Gonzalez furthered his medical education at The University of Texas Health Sciences Center at Houston where he completed his surgical critical care fellowship and a trauma research fellowship. He remained in Houston for many years where he served as medical director of the Shock Trauma Intensive Care Unit at Memorial Hermann Hospital and conducted research on whole blood transfusions, resuscitation alternatives, and more, to advance the field of trauma care.

In 2010, he was pleased to make Austin his home once again. Dr. Gonzalez practiced at University Medical Center Brackenridge before becoming the director of Surgical Critical Care at St. David’s Round Rock Medical Center, a position he held prior to his current role.

Dr. Gonzalez enjoys teaching and has served as an assistant professor of surgery for UT Southwestern and an associate professor of surgery for Texas A&M University Health Science Center. He has been published numerous times in medical journals and texts and has been a featured speaker at medical conference across the country. He is a member of the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma, American College of Surgeons, Association for Academic Surgery, Texas Medical Association and numerous other professional organizations. He is fluent in Spanish.
